Between Reality and Poetry:
Documentary Filmmaking in Poland.

Brochure with five essays by Margarete Wach, including a bibliography of Polish Films and a Chronology of the History of Poland, published by the Documentary Film Center, 48 p.

Documentation of the five-part film retrospective hosted by the Documentary Film Center within the framework of the Baden-Württenberg/Polish cultural exchange in Spring 1998 in Stuttgart, Ulm, Freiburg, Weingarten, Mannheim and Karlsruhe, supported by the Ministry for Science, Research and Art, Baden-Württemberg.

Polish films, and especially documentaries, have always been a sensitive seismograph of societal developments in Poland, at times even their driving force. The films produced immediately after the war and with post-war optimism, were replaced by the films of the "Black Series," which were created in Jerzy Bossak's circles and which deal with the injustices and undesirable trends of government and society since the mid 50s. At the same time, laconical films told the stories of individuals in everyday situations in almost poetic fashion.

These works offered a counterstatement to the thematic and aesthetic norms prescribed by the government; they presented a kind of subversive view.

After the workers' revolt in 1970, critical documentary films were created from the working world, which remained a main theme of documentaries throughout the age of solidarity.

Since 1989, production conditions have been radically changed by the collapse of the studio system and the introduction of free enterprise. "Before you needed to have an idea, now you just need a camera."

This apprehension was mislaid in light of the diversity of the Polish documentaries produced in recent years.
Poland is far from being "At the End of the World" (Piotr Kielara 1996).
