Within the academic community there is an intensive exchange among film archives and researchers both in Germany and internationally. The Documentary Film Centre regularly organises events and seminars concerning various aspects of documentary filmmaking, from historical topics to contemporary concerns.

These conferences and meetings serve as the basis for active discussions about documentary filmmaking. We offer advice and excellent research facilities to film researchers, as well as to undergraduate and graduate film/media students.

Between 1999 and 2003 Dr. Peter Zimmermann and Dr. Kay Hoffmann coordinated a German Research Foundation funded project on the history of documentary films in Germany between 1895 und 1945 together with Dr. Martin Loiperdinger of the University of Trier and Dr. Klaus Kreimeier of the University of Siegen. The three volume Documentary Film History was published by Reclam Publishing House in October 2005 (Stuttgart: Reclam Verlag 2005. 198.- €, ISBN 3-15-030031-2).

At present, the Centre is attempting to establish a similar research project that will deal with the history of documentary film in Germany since 1945.
